Success story

Seasonal preparedness

Profile

Transportation and tourism sectors are dependent on inter-annual climate variability and also affected by climate change. Transportation safety is strongly weather dependent during the winter season, when road and driving conditions are challenging. Timely installation of winter tires is essential for safe driving conditions when temperature falls to near 0°C and roads might be covered by ice and snow. Forecasting the onset/offset of winter season, especially the starting time of winter tire installation is important as much for tire companies and public for preparedness and logistic reasons.

Proposal

Tourism stakeholders need information on future seasonal climatic conditions during different seasons that make possible for them to adapt to the forthcoming changes in the length and quality of climate-dependent tourism seasons. The newly created seasonal tourist indicators for the Greek tourism companies foster the competitive relationships between destinations determining precisely the tourism demand and thus the profitability of tourism enterprises.

Benefits

  • Probabilistic estimations of ensemble Physiologically Equivalent Temperature (PET) classes (especially thermal comfort and extreme hot and cold conditions) as well as estimations of other climate-tourism indicators in high spatial resolution over Greece, three months ahead for tourists’ awareness.
  • Probabilistic estimations of onset/offset dates of the winter driving conditions 6 week ahead serving awareness and seasonal forecast three month ahead for tire enterprises for retail activity
  • Inform tourism stakeholders concerning current trends, future climatic conditions and their impacts to seasonal tourism and the alterations of touristic season adapted to climate change.
  • Raise awareness of the stakeholders interested in the touristic and transport sector to adopt more sustainable ways and increase their climate resilience.

EO based phytoplankton biomass service

Using knowledge about how certain substances, such as one of the main pigments of the phytoplankton (Chlorophyll a - Chl a) alter the colour of the water, these parameters can be derived from optial Earth Observation (EO) satellite sensors. Water Insight provides monitoring services of Chl a based on EO data which is validated with in situmeasurements. Also the maps of WFD phytoplankton biomass status classes are created, by application of the WFD tresholds on Chl a as a proxy for phytoplankton biomass. The maps are made available in a portal, which allows to follow the lakes in time, zoom and download maps and time series.
